Hilton Head's best-kept secret: Lifelong Learning of HHI
Hilton Head's best-kept secret: Lifelong Learning of HHI

When my husband and I retired to Hilton Head in 2008, I was looking forward to all that Hilton Head had to offer. You know exactly what I mean if you are a transplant, too. But in addition to our wonderful beaches, golf courses, great arts and entertainment, I discovered Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island (LLHHI), and with that discovery I found the best that the island had to offer. I call it the crown jewel.

Back in the days when I was running a business and raising children, I had no concept of what a future in the 21st century might actually be like. I never could have imagined 2016 or what being "older"' in it might be like. If you are one of my generational cohorts from the 20th century you might be asking yourself this same question: What happened?

What happened is that life kept going. Robert Fulghum didn't have it completely right; everything you need to know wasn't learned in kindergarten, or in college either for that matter. They were lessons well learned, but the need for learning kept demanding my attention. So after the business was sold and the children grown, I settled into my new home and checked out Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island. I liked what I saw.

The LLHHI philosophy is that learning keeps stride with us as we move into mature adulthood. They believe that older adults have a wealth of knowledge to share and a lot yet to learn. This combination is the foundation for a great place to foster both. But what has happened at LLHHI is even greater than the sum of these parts. A new synergistic energy is producing a generation of older adults that interact with the world in ways that similar generations past could never have dreamed of. We are learning about history, the world, music, philosophy, medical discoveries, travel, writing, great authors and much more.

I joined LLHHI because I liked the energy and the wealth of knowledge I found there. The people were vibrant with the business of living and learning. That was eight years ago, and now in 2016 I look forward to continuing my active membership in the 21st century right here on Hilton Head Island.
