Have a drink, shave your head, fight kids' cancer

The Rooftop Bar at Poseidon will host the seventh annual St. Baldrick's headshaving fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. March 9.

Joe DiNovo of Joe's Barbershop will lead the team of barbers shaving the heads of the Hilton Head area men, women and children, encouraging the community to support their action by making donations to their team.

St. Baldrick's Foundation is a national, volunteer-driven charity committed to finding cures for childhood cancers and giving survivors long and healthy lives.

In these events, volunteers raise money to have their heads shaved to show their support for children who lose their hair during cancer treatments.

In addition to the headshaving, the event will feature a silent auction, and live music by Cranford Hollow. A portion of the evening's drink proceeds will go directly to St. Baldrick's. Tito's Vodka will also be sponsoring the event.

The fundraiser is organized by Terry and Cynthia Cermak, who started the event in honor and in memory of their son, Henry, who died of brain cancer in 2008, at the age of 12.

In 2013, St. Baldrick's created a Hero Fund in his name: the Henry Cermak Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research.

The Cermaks' headshaving events have raised more than $130,000 for Henry's fund, and have supported research grants for pediatric brain cancer treatments at St. Jude Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. This year, the goal is to surpass $150,000 in total donations for Henry's fund.

Anyone who wants to raise funds can join a team or start their own team at stbaldricks.org/events/henrys1ups2018.

There are many ways for volunteers to raise funds without shaving their heads. For more information, call 843-298-2775 or email henrys1ups@gmail.com.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation's sole mission is to find cures for childhood cancers and to give survivors long and healthy lives by funding research.

Since 2005, St. Baldrick's has awarded more than $101 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants.

The grants also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials.
