Why should a busy businessperson make time to play golf? For one thing, you can spend four hours or more with a business colleague or client. The golf course is a terrific place to network.
Unlike many other sports, golf offers a significant amount of time between shots, allowing players to get to know one another and discover common interests outside of business.
Golf also offers a quiet, serene environment for networking. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, players have opportunities for conversation and bonding.
Some employers use golf as a way to observe potential employees and clients. They believe they can learn more about a person during a round of golf than in an interview across a desk.
A round of golf can reveal several personal traits:
• Does she have a positive or negative attitude?
• What does her behavior reveal about her character, sense of humor and honesty?
• What can you learn about her interests, dislikes and family life?
There are many similarities between golf and business. Both require strategic thinking, decision-making and patience. Golf provides time for conversation and camaraderie, as well as opportunities to discuss ideas, exchange information and learn about a client’s goals.
Businesspeople who play golf can gain an advantage in their careers. Many people advancing into high-level management positions recognize the value of building personal relationships through golf. I highly recommend that businesspeople get involved in the game, whether for networking or relaxation.
Locally, there are opportunities to play golf after work. Spark Golf leagues are available at several public golf courses, offering a chance to network while playing nine holes.
Seventeen years ago, I started a women’s golf group for those who work and want to meet people through the game. Chicks With Sticks plays during the spring and summer at many local public courses. It is a great opportunity for businesswomen to relax after work.
