As colder weather sets in, demand for space heaters increases. Nearly half of all home heating fires occur during December, January and February.
Space heaters are economical, easy to use and a convenient source of supplemental heat in drafty or chilly homes. Although portable heaters are designed with safety in mind, improper use can lead to fires, burns, explosions or electric shock. Space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from furniture, walls and bedding, and they should never be left unattended.
Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels. Space heaters should be placed on a stable, level surface, never on cabinets, tables or furniture, and should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not into extension cords or power strips.
Do not use a space heater in a workshop or garage or in areas where flammable materials such as paint, gasoline or matches are stored.
If you are using a space heater from a previous year, inspect it before each use. Check for cracked or broken plugs, loose connections, damaged plastic parts, exposed wiring or heating elements that could ignite.
Always turn off space heaters when leaving the room or going to sleep. Choose models equipped with automatic shutoff features that turn the heater off if it overheats or tips over.
Keep space heaters out of walkways to prevent tripping hazards and never block an exit. Do not allow pets to get too close to space heaters.
Look for space heaters that are listed by a recognized testing laboratory to ensure they meet safety standards.
Never use a space heater as a dryer. Keep clothing and other combustible materials away, and do not use heaters to warm bedding, cook food, dry clothes or thaw pipes.
Unplug space heaters when they are not in use.
Consider the age of your space heater. Long-term use can lead to safety issues, so follow cleaning and maintenance instructions, especially between heating seasons.
