As hurricane season continues, there is no better time than now to make sure you are prepared. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and while late August through early September is typically the most active period, storms can develop at any time. Fortunately, the Town has a dedicated emergency management team that closely monitors weather conditions and takes proactive steps to prepare for potential storms. We encourage every resident and visitor to do the same.
In the event of a potential or actual storm, you play a vital role in helping ensure a safe response before, during, and after the storm. The best way to protect yourself and your family is to have a disaster plan and a well-stocked emergency kit. The Town’s online Hurricane Center (hiltonheadislandsc.gov) offers hurricane guides and helpful resources outlining what your emergency plan and supply kit should include.
I’d also like to address two of the most common questions we receive whenever a hurricane threatens our area. First, only the governor of South Carolina can issue an evacuation order based on a storm’s anticipated impact. If an evacuation is ordered, the Town will move quickly to share that information through all official communication channels. Second, our bridges to Hilton Head Island remain open unless the Island faces dangerously high winds or an evacuation order is in effect.
When it comes to storm information, please rely on official sources for accurate and timely updates. Follow the Town’s social media channels and sign up for our e-subscription service to receive emergency alerts directly. Unofficial sources can sometimes spread misinformation, creating unnecessary confusion and concern.
Please know that your Town is preparing as well. We have developed comprehensive emergency response plans to protect our community and support recovery after a disaster. We have also established an emergency reserve fund to help finance critical response and recovery efforts.
Behind the scenes, our Emergency Management Team, led by Tom Dunn in Fire Rescue, works year-round to ensure readiness. Team members participate in annual training exercises and emergency simulations to strengthen response capabilities. The Town is proud to be one of only three emergency management programs accredited through the Emergency Management Accreditation Program, reflecting our commitment to preparedness and excellence. Additionally, the National Hurricane Center regularly updates forecasting tools, models, and communication products. Our team stays informed about these changes and evaluates how they may affect our response timelines, planning, and public messaging.
Preparedness also requires strong partnerships. We work closely with neighborhood leaders, utility providers, medical facilities, and local agencies, including the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Division, to ensure a coordinated response.
Ultimately, hurricane preparedness is a team effort. By preparing now, staying informed, and following official guidance, we can help keep our families, neighbors, and community safe throughout hurricane season.
