Theresa King exhibit explores healing and spirituality

A new exhibit opening this month at Art League Gallery invites visitors to slow down, reflect and connect with the natural world through the work of artist Theresa King.

“Whispers from the Soul,” on display May 19 through June 19, showcases a collection of expressive oil paintings rooted in themes of healing, spirituality and energy. The self-taught artist draws heavily on her lifelong connection to nature, using movement, color and recurring imagery such as clouds to convey a sense of calm.

“I grew up in a chaotic atmosphere, and the only time I felt peace was [lying] on the ground looking up at the clouds in the sky,” King said. “Nature has always been my inspiration. I could sit and watch clouds for hours.”

That early experience continues to shape her work, which often reflects a quiet, meditative quality. King began painting in the 1980s, experimenting across multiple mediums before settling on oils.

“I painted a lot of terrible paintings, and figured out what is right and wrong,” she said. “I tried watercolor and struggled. I tried acrylic — it dried too fast. Tried oils and fell in love with it.”

Her creative process remains intuitive and deeply personal. King said she often relies on a spiritual connection to guide her work.

“I dream my concepts and let God guide my hand in my paintings,” she said.

In addition to her artistic development, King’s work is influenced by significant life experiences, including her battle with cancer and years spent caring for family members. Those challenges, she said, helped her recognize and focus on what she describes as healing energy, which now plays a central role in her art.

That perspective informs the intent behind the exhibit.

“What I want people to get as the message from this show: that there is energy, and images and color, and that energy can be healing. Quantum energy,” King said. “I want visitors to feel calm and peaceful, and the work to resonate with them.”

The exhibit will include an opening reception May 20 from 5 to 7 p.m., along with artist demonstrations scheduled for May 30 and June 15, and a June 4 talk titled “How Color Affects People Emotionally.” All events are free and open to the public.

Art League Gallery, located inside the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, features work from more than 200 member artists and rotates exhibits monthly.

Organizers say King’s exhibit offers visitors not only a visual experience but also an opportunity for reflection.
