The sixth annual Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K Run & Walk Bluffton will be held Nov. 8 at Rose Hill Plantation, with organizers hoping to draw 2,500 participants.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Rose Hill Plantation, 1 Equestrian Way. This year’s event will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The event honors those killed in the attacks as well as first responders and military service members.

More than 1,500 runners and walkers from South Carolina, Georgia and other areas participated last year, when the Bluffton event raised more than $170,000. Organizers said the fundraising total ranked third among Tunnel to Towers races nationwide, behind New York City and Orlando.

In addition to the 5K, this year’s event will serve as a donation drop-off location for the fifth annual Beaufort County First Responders Food Drive. It also will recognize the 25th anniversary of the Hilton Head Firefighters Association.

First responders, military personnel and representatives from government agencies throughout the Lowcountry are expected to participate.
Proceeds from registrations support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which provides assistance to catastrophically injured veterans and first responders, Gold Star families and families of fallen first responders and military service members.
