Annual “Recycle Your Jacket” program helps those in need

Outside Brands will bring back and expand its annual Recycle Your Jacket initiative from January 17th through January 31st, 2026, encouraging community members to donate gently used cold-weather clothing to support those in need.

The program, which began nearly 40 years ago, collects clean, lightly used jackets, coats and sweaters. This year, Outside Brands has expanded the initiative to also include gently used shoes. Donors are eligible to receive up to 50% off a new jacket, coat or pair of shoes as a thank-you for participating.

Cold-weather clothing remains one of the most requested items by local assistance organizations during winter months, according to organizers.

“Our Recycle Your Jacket program has always been about more than apparel—it’s about community, stewardship and taking care of one another,” said Mike Overton, founder and CEO of Outside Brands. “Expanding this program to include shoes allows us to deepen that impact while continuing to encourage people to stay warm, stay active and stay outside.”

Donations will be accepted at all three Outside Brands retail locations: Outside Hilton Head at 50 Shelter Cove Lane in the Plaza at Shelter Cove; Outside Palmetto Bluff at 37 Boat House St. at Wilson Landing; and Outside Savannah at 300 W. River St. in the Plant Riverside District.

Company officials said the initiative reflects Outside Brands’ long-standing focus on sustainability and community support by ensuring usable outdoor gear finds a second life with individuals who need it most. All donated items must be clean and in usable condition.

Outside Brands was founded in 1979 as a windsurfing school and has since grown into an outdoor recreation, retail and destination management company serving the South Carolina Lowcountry and coastal Georgia.
