Hilton Head Island’s past takes a spooky turn in October as the Heritage Library brings local legends and ghost stories to life after dark.
“Ghosts and Myths of Hilton Head Island” will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16, 17 and 24 at the Zion Cemetery and Baynard Mausoleum Outdoor Learning Center, 574 William Hilton Parkway.
The outdoor program combines island history with tales of the unexplained, using characters connected to Hilton Head’s 18th- and 19th-century past to guide visitors through stories that have become part of local lore.
Among the historical figures brought to life are Lydia Davant, Andrew Baynard, Cap’n Jack Stoney, Mary Kirk, Paulson Schwarzer and Williams Eddings Baynard.
The evening also delves into some of Hilton Head Island’s best-known ghost stories, including tales associated with the Harbour Town Lighthouse, the Baynard Funeral Procession and the Blue Lady of Hilton Head Island.
The setting adds another layer to the experience. Zion Cemetery is one of Hilton Head Island’s historic sites, and the neighboring Baynard Mausoleum provides a fitting backdrop for an evening devoted to stories from the island’s past.
The Heritage Library advises purchasing tickets early because the program has sold out in the past and attendance is limited. The event is not recommended for children younger than 12.
Tickets are $15.
In addition to “Ghosts and Myths,” the Heritage Library offers programs throughout the year focused on Hilton Head Island history and ancestry research, including costumed cemetery tours and tours of historic Fort Mitchel.
