Haig Point launches $40 million Project Harmony initiative

Haig Point Club & Community Association has launched a $40 million investment initiative that will guide golf course renovations, new amenities, infrastructure improvements and residential development over the next several years.

The plan, known as Project Harmony, was approved by 77% of the community’s membership and is designed to coordinate improvements across multiple areas of the private, member-owned club community on Daufuskie Island.

Haig Point Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Don Hunter said the timing reflects both market conditions and the community’s position within the region.

“The Hilton Head area is now one of fastest growing areas of the country,” Hunter said in responses to questions from the Bluffton Sun and Hilton Head Sun. “At Haig Point, we have a unique atmosphere on a peaceful and private island. We are fortunate to have available lots to build new homes when most of the other developments are nearly complete. We feel like it is our time to enhance the lives of our loyal members/owners.”

A major portion of the investment will focus on the club’s Signature Course. Planned improvements include rebuilding greens on holes 1 and 15, partially rebuilding the remaining greens, reshaping and leveling tees, reconstructing bunkers, regrading fairways, replacing turf grasses and upgrading course infrastructure.

“This is not about reinventing the course,” Hunter said. “It’s about restoring and refining it in a way that brings it back to its full potential while ensuring it performs at a high level for years to come.”

The Osprey Course also is slated for significant changes under plans developed by golf course architect Rees Jones. The project calls for a new irrigation system, a short-game practice area and 21 new forward tee locations that will create a par-3 course option.

“The opportunity with Osprey is significant,” Hunter said. “We believe it can become one of the best 9-hole experiences in the region, something that not only supports our membership but enhances the overall golf offering at Haig Point.”

Construction on the golf facilities is expected to occur in phases between late 2026 and 2029. According to the club, the goal is to maintain 18 holes of golf for members throughout the renovation period.

Project Harmony also includes establishment of a barge operation intended to support construction and infrastructure work in the boat-access-only community. Hunter said the arrangement is designed to improve efficiency for ongoing development.

“Myrick Marine, out of Savannah, provides us with deep water access on either route,” Hunter said. “Operating with a partner barge company streamlines the efficiency of deliveries and ensures the productivity of our builders.”

Residential construction is another key component of the initiative. The community is targeting approximately 25 new homes annually and plans to build 115 homes over the next five years.

Hunter said member support for the proposal followed extensive discussion, particularly regarding golf course improvements.

“A project of this scope always requires meaningful internal communication,” he said. “Particularly with the refurbishment of the golf course, we had to be detailed about the specifics of the agronomy. Our most important asset is being restored, and golf is one of the key ingredients in the Haig Point experience for our members.”

He said improvements are intended to modernize infrastructure while preserving the club’s long-term viability.

“Restoring it to modern technology and infrastructure is mandatory to its long-range health,” Hunter said.

The plan also calls for development of a wellness and fitness center targeted for 2028, expanded racquet and pickleball facilities, road improvements and continued investment in community infrastructure.

“Wellness is another critical piece of the Haig Point lifestyle, so a new facility answers another need,” Hunter said. “Pickleball is a popular pastime that adds to our lengthy list of activities. We’ve broadened the appeal of our amenities to compete with the best of the best clubs in the Southeast and simultaneously added to the value of the individual investments of our membership.”
