Historic Mitchelville Brings Football, History and Opportunity Together

Football was the starting point, but the conversation went far beyond the field when Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park opened its film series with a student program. The program featured an SC State/NFL Films documentary and a personal discussion with Coach Willie E. Jeffries, the South Carolina State football legend and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, and Timothy Singleton, a Hilton Head Island coach, entrepreneur and youth-development leader.

Coach Jeffries shared lessons drawn from a remarkable career. For the Hilton Head Island High School students in attendance, the conversation offered a reminder that mentorship, perseverance and opportunity can shape a future long after the final whistle.

Ford’s Shell Ring Park Opens
Hilton Head Islanders gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Ford’s Shell Ring Park on Squire Pope Rd., a new passive park created in partnership with Beaufort County to protect one of the Island’s significant archaeological sites.

Named after the Ford family, the park invites visitors to explore the natural surroundings, walk the trails and learn about the Island’s earliest inhabitants. It’s a place where nature and history meet, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who called Hilton Head home thousands of years ago.
